The government has set aside Tk42,497.45 crore for the Ministry of Defence in the proposed national budget for fiscal year 2026-27, showing a hike of about Tk1,835.67 crore from FY2025-26 revised budget, which was at Tk40,661.78 crore.
According to the budget documents, the proposed allocation comprises Tk40,886.29 crore for operating expenditure and Tk1,611.16 crore for development expenditure.
The ministry has also been allocated Tk250 crore under financial assets, mainly in the form of loans.
The Ministry of Defence oversees the management of the country's defence services and is responsible for matters relating to national defence on land, sea and air.
It also supervises military land management, meteorological services, space and satellite research, cadet colleges, the Bangladesh National Cadet Corps, and the Survey of Bangladesh.
The government has outlined several key infrastructure and modernisation projects under the ministry for the upcoming fiscal year, including infrastructure development of Commander Flotilla West (COMFLOT West) in Mongla; construction of the second phase of the Cancer Center at Combined Military Hospital (CMH), Dhaka; development of infrastructure for the Army Institute of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation at Savar; construction of officers' residential accommodation at Nirjhor Residential Area in Dhaka Cantonment; modernisation of military farms in Chattogram, Cumilla and Mymensingh; establishment of an Airmen Training Institute at Bangladesh Air Force Base Zahurul Haque in Chattogram; construction of an office complex for the Department of Military Lands and Cantonments and MEO Central Circle in Dhaka; establishment of ADCC North at BAF Base Paharkanchanpur; construction of a modern Jet A-1 fuel reservoir at Bangladesh Air Force Base Kurmitola; expansion of Bangladesh Navy Dockyard Technical Institute in Chattogram; and installation of a water purification plant at Ramu Cantonment.
