Former adviser to the interim government Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain said on Tuesday that he was not a member of the “kitchen cabinet,” which allegedly exerted influence on matters related to ministries beyond its jurisdiction.
Asif Mahmud, also the spokesperson for the National Citizen Party (NCP), made the claim at an emergency press conference at the party’s central office in Dhaka amid allegations that the student leader was among the members of the “kitchen cabinet.”
The issue surfaced to the fore after former foreign adviser to the interim government Touhid Hossain said on Monday that he had decided to resign from his post three times due to the influence of the “kitchen cabinet.”
Touhid made the remarks during a live interview with a private television channel. At Tuesday’s press conference, Asif also denied any involvement in the trade deal with the United States.
He said no discussions had been held with the NCP regarding the agreement either.
Asif alleged that Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, who was the national security adviser at the time, shifted the responsibility onto the interim government at the advice of the BNP.
