Traders and wholesalers pay Tk2-3 crore to extortionists linked to the ruling BNP every day at Karwan Bazar, alleged the area’s Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Saiful Alam Khan Milon on Monday.

Attempts to get police or legal support have so far proved futile, he said, adding he would now seek the direct intervention of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to resolve the issue.

The crisis invariably fuels consumer inflation said the Dhaka-12 constituency lawmaker at a budget discussion hosted by citizen's platform for SDGs, Bangladesh, in the capital.
