A Dhaka court on Friday sent seven suspects to jail after the completion of their remand in a case filed over allegedly extorting money from kidney specialist Dr Kamrul Islam at the CKD Urology Hospital.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order after police produced them before the court and sought their detention.
The accused are: Faruk Hossain Sumon, Md Liton Mia, Md Falan Mia, Md Rubel, Md Moin Uddin, Swapon Kazi and Md Shawon Hossain.
Earlier, on 13 April, the court placed Faruk Hossain Sumon, Md Liton Mia, Md Falan Mia and Md Rubel each on a four-day remand in the case. The following day, the court sent Md Moin Uddin, Swapon Kazi and Md Shawon Hossain on three-day remands each.
According to the case statement, on 10 April, individuals claiming to be leaders of Jubo Dal demanded Tk5 lakh as extortion from Dr Kamrul Islam at CKD Urology Hospital, which was established by the doctor, in Shyamoli, Dhaka.
Abu Hanif, in charge of the hospital’s operation theatre, later filed the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
