DU bus crash injures 10 including driver in Karwan Bazar

At least 10 people, including the driver, were injured when a Dhaka University shuttle bus lost control and collided with a microbus while descending from the Moghbazar-Mohakhali Expressway in the capital’s Karwan Bazar area on 15 April.

The accident occurred around 9:00 am as the ‘Khanika’ shuttle bus was getting off the expressway.

According to eyewitnesses and sources, one of the bus tyres suddenly burst, causing the driver to lose control before the vehicle rammed into a microbus ahead. The impact severely damaged the front portion of the bus, leaving several students injured.

Rescuers immediately rushed the injured to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College Hospital, Insaf Barakah Kidney and General Hospital and Samarita Hospital for treatment.

DU Transport Office Manager Kamrul Hasan initially reported that between five and seven students were injured, adding that none sustained critical injuries. However, he confirmed that two to three passengers of the microbus were seriously injured.

DUCSU Vice-President Shadik Kayem said at least three students received treatment at Holy Family Hospital and another three at Insaf Hospital, while others were taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

DUCSU Student Transport Secretary Asif Abdullah said initial reports suggested that seven to eight students were injured in the incident and were promptly taken to hospitals for necessary care.

DUCSU Literature and Culture Affairs Secretary Mosaddiq Ali Ibne Mohammad said DUCSU leaders visited different hospitals after the accident to check on the injured and ensure proper treatment. He noted that some passengers seated at the front of both vehicles remained in serious condition.

Naimuzzaman Emon, a student who was on the bus, said the tyre burst suddenly, causing the vehicle to lose control.

The incident has sparked concerns among students over the fitness of university buses. Several students alleged that the vehicle had long been unfit and that repeated complaints to the authorities had gone unaddressed.

Shadik Kayem claimed the bus was not roadworthy and said they had previously urged the administration to replace it and change the depot, but no action had been taken. He added that they had demanded accountability for those responsible.

Authorities have yet to release the identities of the injured.
