Two people were killed and another sustained serious injury in a mob attack at Bonparil village under Manikganj Sadar upazila, following allegations linked to the murder of a nine-year-old girl.
“The girl’s body has been recovered and sent for autopsy. Those involved will be identified and legal action will be taken. Legal steps will also be taken over the mob violence,” Manikganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Ekran Hossain said.
He further said additional police have been deployed in the area and the situation is now under control.
According to locals, at around 5pm yesterday, Atika, daughter of Dudu Mia of Bonparil village, went missing.
Following her disappearance, the family circulated the news on social media and used loudspeakers across the area in an effort to locate her. At around 10pm last night, locals discovered Atika’s body in a maize field near their home.
The girl was found with her hands and feet bound, and police suspect she was killed during an attempted robbery of her gold jewellery.
After the discovery, locals held three suspects -- autorickshaw driver Pannu Mia, 45, his brother Fazlu, 28, and Pannu’s son Nazmul, 20 -- and allegedly beat them up.
Upon receiving information, police from Manikganj Sadar Police Station arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control.
Pannu Mia and Fazlu were killed on the spot; Nazmul was critically injured but was rescued by police and taken to Manikganj 250-bed Hospital for treatment.
