BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said the overall law and order situation in the country has yet to improve, expressing concern over what he described as the government’s failure to recover illegal weapons.
However, he expressed hope that the situation will improve soon.
“The government has failed to recover illegal weapons. We are very concerned. This is a failure of the government,” he said while exchanging views with journalists at his residence in Thakurgaon on Monday (12 January).
Fakhrul stated that the BNP remained hopeful the situation would improve during the election period. “So far, the electoral environment is acceptable. The real situation will be clearer once polls campaign begins,” he said.
Commenting on the Cricket World Cup in India, Mirza Fakhrul said politics was linked to cricket and that national dignity was at stake. “Insulting cricket means insulting the country. We agree with the decision of the cricket board. We should be united on such issues,” he said.
Referring to the Teesta project, he said the BNP was committed to its implementation and that the matter would be resolved through mutual relations with India.
He also made a forceful political remark, saying his party knew how to resist what he termed fascism.
At the meeting, Mirza Fakhrul urged journalists to carefully read the BNP’s announced 31-point programme, describing it as the party’s sole charter for the future.
