18-kilometre traffic congestion on Dhaka-Tangail Highway

An approximately 18-kilometre traffic jam has developed on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway, triggered by heavy traffic volume and multiple vehicle breakdowns on the Jamuna Bridge approach road.

The congestion began late Friday night (5 June), stretching from the Jamuna Bridge toll plaza to Pauli.

Thousands of travelers have been facing severe inconvenience, with women, children, and elderly passengers suffering the most.

Amid the post-Eid-ul-Azha rush of people returning to their workplaces, around 20 to 25 vehicles broke down on the Jamuna Bridge over the past 24 hours.

Traffic movement was repeatedly disrupted as recovery vehicles worked to remove the disabled vehicles.

On Friday night, a bus collided with another bus near Pillar No. 7 of the bridge, leaving one person dead and several others injured. Traffic on the bridge remained suspended for a period following the accident.

Altogether, the situation has caused significant hardship for travelers returning from their Eid holidays.

Speaking to journalist at around 10:00am on Saturday, Md Amirul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Jamuna Bridge West Police Station, said traffic on the Sirajganj highway has now returned to normal. He noted that the lengthy congestion was caused by the breakdown of around 20 to 25 vehicles on the bridge, most of which were old and poorly maintained.

“We made every possible effort to ease the situation and restore smooth traffic flow,” he added.
