Train movement on one of the two railway lines connecting Chattogram with the rest of the country was suspended this morning after a passenger train collided with a sand-laden truck at an unauthorised level crossing in Mirsarai.
The accident occurred around 8:55am in Chinki Astana area when the Sylhet-bound intercity Paharika Express struck the truck, railway officials said.
The impact pushed the vehicle onto the down line, disrupting services on the route.
"The train was travelling on the up line when a sand-laden truck entered the tracks through an unauthorised crossing," Farhan Mahmud, divisional transport officer of Bangladesh Railway's Chattogram division, told reporter.
"There was no gatekeeper or barrier at the crossing. After the collision, the truck was pushed onto the down line. The up line has since been reopened, but services on the down line remain suspended," he said.
The Paharika Express remained stranded for nearly two hours before resuming its journey to Sylhet at 10:44am after the up track was cleared.
Railway authorities said they were working to remove the truck and restore normal operations on the affected route.
