The District Detective Branch (DB) has arrested four people, including the prime accused, in connection with the murder of an auto-van driver and the hijacking of his vehicle in Joypurhat. The suspects allegedly committed the crime after posing as passengers.

DB Officer-in-Charge (OC) Raju Kamal confirmed the arrests in a press release on Sunday afternoon (October 18).

The arrestees are Habil Uddin, 40, the alleged mastermind and prime accused in the murder, and his alleged accomplices Anwar Hossain, 47, Zakaria, 30, and Jahangir Alam, alias Biplob.

According to the press release, on the afternoon of October 13, Habil hired an auto-van driven by Shakhawat Hossain from Shalaipur Bazar in Panchbibi Upazila, claiming that he wanted to travel to Patharghata.

When the vehicle reached a secluded area near Patharghata Bridge, Habil allegedly struck Shakhawat on the head with an iron rod, killing him. He then wiped away the blood with the victim's towel, discarded the towel and the weapon beneath the bridge, and fled with the vehicle.

The stolen auto-van was later sold for Tk 43,000 with the help of another alleged accomplice, Anwar.

Following the filing of a case at Panchbibi Police Station, the DB conducted raids at various locations in Joypurhat and Naogaon and arrested the four suspects.

Based on information provided by the arrestees, the DB recovered the stolen auto-van, the weapon allegedly used in the murder, the bloodstained towel, and Tk 2,500 in cash from the proceeds of the vehicle's sale.

Joypurhat District DB OC Raju Kamal said legal proceedings against the accused were underway and that further investigation into the incident was ongoing.
