A local leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was critically injured in a stabbing in Rajapur Union of Bhola Sadar upazila on Saturday evening, while the alleged attacker later died after being beaten by a mob, police and local sources said.

The deceased, Asif, 25, died at Bhola 250-bed General Hospital early Sunday, October 18, after police rescued him from the scene and took him to the hospital for treatment.

The injured BNP leader, Hossain Majhi, is the president of the party’s Ward No. 7 unit in Rajapur Union. He was reportedly referred to Dhaka for advanced treatment as his condition deteriorated.

According to police and local sources, Hossain and Asif had an altercation on Saturday morning over previous enmity. Later, at around 6:00pm, Asif allegedly stabbed Hossain with a knife in the Anandabazar area of Rajapur Union, leaving him seriously injured.

Local residents rescued Hossain and took him to a hospital. He was subsequently referred to Dhaka for better treatment.

Following the alleged stabbing, Asif reportedly fled the scene. At around 11:00pm, an agitated crowd spotted him in a market area, chased him and beat him, leaving him critically injured.

After receiving information about the incident, members of the Ilisha Police Investigation Centre rushed to the scene, rescued Asif and took him to Bhola General Hospital. He died while undergoing treatment early Sunday.

Asif was a resident of Rajapur Union. Local sources identified his father as Md. Dalu Mia and his mother as Halima Begum.

Confirming the incidents, Md. Bashir Ahmed, officer-in-charge of the Ilisha Police Investigation Centre, said police were investigating both incidents and would take legal action based on the findings.
