Collected PhotoA total of 1,451 farmers in Kaliganj upazila of Gazipur have received Farmer Cards under the government’s agricultural support programme in the first phase.
The cards were distributed at a programme held at Kalb Resort in Nagari Union of Kaliganj on Thursday afternoon.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated the Farmer Card programme centrally from Fulgazi upazila of Feni, joining 77 selected upazilas and agricultural blocks across the country. The programme in Kaliganj was also inaugurated virtually on the occasion.
According to the upazila administration, 1,451 farmers from Chupair Block of Jamalpur Union were initially selected for the cards. They include 39 landless farmers, 571 marginal farmers, 770 small farmers, 68 medium-sized farmers and three large farmers.
Lawmakers AKM Fazlul Haque Milon, SM Rafiqul Islam and Md Mujibur Rahman, Gazipur Zila Parishad Administrator Chowdhury Ishrak Ahmed Siddiqui and BNP leader Shah Riazul Hannan handed the cards to the selected farmers.
Gazipur Deputy Commissioner Md Nurul Karim Bhuiyan, Police Super Mohammad Jasim Uddin, Kaliganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer ATM Kamrul Islam, Assistant Commissioner (Land) Al-Amin Haldar, Kaliganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Zakir Hossain, local BNP leaders, government officials, journalists and people from different walks of life were also present.
The selected farmers will also receive financial incentives to purchase agricultural inputs along with the cards.
The Farmer Card system has been introduced to ensure direct and organised delivery of agricultural assistance to farmers.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the government is working to bring 4.3 million farmers under the Farmer Card programme across the country this year.
