Police have recovered the hanging body of Mariam Khatun, the second wife of controversial MP Gazi Nazrul Islam who was expelled from Jamaat-e-Islami, from a flat at the NAM Bhaban near the parliament complex in Dhaka.

The death comes two months after a video showing Nazrul with 19-year-old Mariam went viral on social media in July, triggering widespread discussion.

Nazrul had then acknowledged Mariam as his second wife but faced nationwide criticism and intense political pressure. Jamaat subsequently expelled him from the party.

Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner Ibn Mizan said, “The hanging body of Mariam, second wife of GM Nazrul Islam, MP for Satkhira-4, was found at Flat 203 on the third floor of Building 5 of NAM Bhaban. A CID forensic team and PBI are working there.”

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Tejgaon Division Additional Deputy Commissioner Fazlul Karim said they received the news around 5:30pm, while the incident likely occurred between 3pm and 3:30pm.

In July, an intimate video of Nazrul and Mariam at a hotel in Dhaka’s Moghbazar spread on Facebook. Jamaat activists initially claimed it had been created using artificial intelligence.

The MP later posted on Facebook, identifying the woman as his second wife.

He said, “On the 13th of July, 2026, I went to my second wife’s father Md Masum Billah’s business office in Moghbazar with my first and second wives, Maksuda Begum and Mariam Begum. We stayed there for approximately one hour and 15 minutes.”

Nazrul alleged that his driver and Mariam’s maternal uncle Obaidullah left before Zuhr prayers, saying they would check the car, then returned with five to seven unidentified people who held them hostage and extorted Tk 100,000.

He further alleged that the rented car he used was later detained in collusion with Obaidullah, with several hundred thousand taka demanded in instalments. When they refused to pay, they were threatened.

Nazrul said he later learned the incident stemmed from an old enmity and family dispute between Masum and Obaidullah.
