Dengue: 6 more die, 1,593 hospitalised

Six more people have died from dengue in Bangladesh over the past 24 hours, while 1,593 patients have been hospitalised.

The government puts this year’s dengue death toll at 184, including 87 deaths in September -- the highest monthly toll so far this year.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Sunday said 171 patients were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka North City Corporation and 132 in Dhaka South during the 24 hours from 8am Saturday.

Another 384 were admitted to hospitals elsewhere in Dhaka Division.

Among other divisions, 154 were admitted in Barishal, 167 in Chattogram, 292 in Khulna, 82 in Mymensingh, 137 in Rajshahi, 65 in Rangpur and nine in Sylhet.

According to the bulletin, 1,587 patients were discharged after treatment in the past 24 hours.

A total of 61,972 people have been hospitalised with dengue this year, with 57,610 discharged.

The health directorate has recorded dengue hospitalisations and deaths since 2000. The highest number of admissions was 321,179 in 2023, when 1,705 people also died -- the highest death toll.

Last year, more than 400 died and around 102,000 cases were recorded.
