Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) has outlined an ambitious development agenda with 12 proposed projects worth Tk 11,651 crore, aiming to transform the port city into a modern, sustainable and smart urban centre.
The proposed projects, presented during the corporation's budget session, focus on addressing long-standing urban challenges, including waterlogging, traffic congestion, waste management, environmental protection and improved public services. Several of the projects are currently at the development proposal (DPP) preparation stage.
The largest proposal is a Tk 3,500 crore canal excavation project, which aims to restore 21 major canals along with other waterways to improve drainage capacity and reduce chronic waterlogging across the city. In addition, CCC has proposed a Tk 2,800 crore project to operate and maintain the 36 canals previously developed by the Chattogram Development Authority (CDA).
To strengthen the city's transport network, the corporation plans to undertake a Tk 2,200 crore primary road development project, while another Tk 1,000 crore has been earmarked for constructing overpasses at key railway crossings. A separate Tk 300 crore proposal has been prepared for the construction of the Dewanhat Bridge.
As part of its smart city initiative, CCC is planning a Tk 400 crore project to install AI-powered CCTV surveillance systems and smart lighting, including both solar and conventional technologies. Another Tk 450 crore project is being prepared to introduce an integrated smart traffic management system aimed at easing congestion and improving road safety.
The city corporation also plans to invest Tk 450 crore in upgrading public spaces, parks and green areas to enhance the urban environment and improve recreational facilities for residents.
Waste management has been identified as another priority area. A modern sanitary landfill is planned with financial assistance from the South Korean government, while a separate Tk 298 crore project will procure modern waste collection vehicles and equipment to improve municipal waste services.
The development package also includes a Tk 50 crore Kitchen Market-cum-Commercial Building to expand commercial facilities and a Tk 203 crore new CCC headquarters to improve administrative efficiency and public service delivery.
Officials believe that once implemented, the projects will significantly improve Chattogram's transport network, drainage system, waste management and civic services, paving the way for a smarter, greener and more resilient city.
