Metro rail services on the Uttara-Motijheel route were temporarily suspended for about 20 minutes this morning after a cluster of gas balloons got entangled in the overhead catenary system near the Dhaka University station.
The incident took place around 6:45am in front of the Raju Memorial Sculpture adjacent to the station.
According to Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited sources, a large number of Argentina football supporters had gathered at the Teacher-Student Centre area following the team's match. During the celebrations, a cluster of blue-and-white gas balloons drifted into the metro rail's overhead catenary system.
The metro rail's automatic safety system immediately cut off the power supply after the balloons came into contact with the high-voltage line.
As a result, a train travelling from Uttara to Motijheel stopped near Dhaka University station and services across the entire line were temporarily suspended.
DMTCL officials said the balloons were removed from the overhead wire within 15 to 20 minutes. After safety checks were completed, power supply was restored and metro rail operations resumed.
