Four people, including a father and his son, died while trying to rescue a goat that had fallen into an abandoned toilet pit in Madhupur upazila of Tangail this morning.

The deceased were identified as Neymar Mrong, 12; his father Babul Hadima, 35; Gabriel Nokrek, 45; and Ratan Nokrek, 25, said Labu Tarafdar, station officer of Madhupur Fire Service.

According to the fire service official and local sources, a goat kid fell into the abandoned pit at Jalui village. Neymar was the first to climb down to rescue it. When he failed to come back up, his father entered the pit.

After Babul also failed to emerge, Gabriel, a relative from the area, and later neighbour Ratan went down into the pit one after another. When none of them returned, local residents informed the fire service.

Firefighters later recovered the bodies of all four victims from the pit.

Labu Tarafdar told The Financial Post that they suspect the victims may have died from a lack of oxygen after entering the disused eight-foot-deep pit.

"It is very tragic that four people lost their lives while trying to rescue a goat kid worth only Tk 1,200," he said.

Officer-in-Charge AKM Fazlul Haque of Madhupur Police Station said a police team had been sent to the scene.
