A truck driver and his assistant were killed after a stone-laden truck lost control and overturned into a roadside ditch in Kushtia sadar upazila on Sunday morning.
The accident occurred at around 8:30am on the Kushtia bypass road, between the Trimohoni and Bottoil areas.
The deceased were identified as driver Anichur Rahman Anis and his assistant Ratan, both residents of sadar upazila in Faridpur district.
Kushtia Chourhas Highway Police Station officer-in-charge Sheikh Sekendar Ali said that the truck was carrying stones from Sonamasjid in Chapainawabganj and was heading towards Faridpur when it lost control on the bypass road.
The vehicle veered off the road, overturned into a ditch and caught fire shortly after the crash, leaving both the driver and the helper dead on the spot, he said.
On information, a fire service team rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control.
Firefighters first recovered the body of the driver. The body of the assistant was later retrieved after he was found trapped under the stone load, hes said.
Kushtia Fire Service senior station officer Arshed Ali said that preliminary findings suggested that the accident might have been caused by a mechanical fault or because the driver fell asleep.
“The exact cause of the incident will be confirmed after investigation,” he said.
Police and Fire Service personnel completed rescue operations at the scene, and legal procedures were underway, he added.
