The Election Commission (EC) has introduced a compensation scheme under which the families of election officials, employees and law enforcement personnel who die while performing election or voter registration duties will receive Tk10 lakh in financial assistance.

The move was confirmed on Wednesday by several EC officials.

According to the policy, signed by EC Deputy Secretary Rashedul Islam, the family of any official or employee engaged in election or voter list preparation work who dies as a result of an accident or attack while on duty will be entitled to Tk10 lakh.

Under the scheme, individuals who suffer serious injuries resulting in permanent disability will receive Tk400,000, while those sustaining serious injuries leading to temporary disability will receive Tk200,000. Injured personnel may receive up to Tk50,000 in assistance.

The policy also provides compensation for illness-related incidents occurring while on duty. In cases of sudden illness, serious illness or death, financial assistance of up to Tk600,000 will be available. Those suffering permanent disability due to serious illness will be eligible for Tk300,000, while temporarily ill individuals may receive Tk50,000.

In addition, personnel requiring expensive hospital treatment may receive up to Tk300,000, while those undergoing general hospital treatment may be granted up to Tk200,000.

Affected individuals or their families will be required to submit applications through the prescribed process. Applications will be reviewed by a designated committee before being forwarded to the Commission, which will determine the amount of assistance to be awarded.

EC officials said there had previously been no comprehensive and clearly defined policy governing such compensation. The new guidelines are also expected to help resolve disputes regarding the distribution of financial assistance among legal heirs.
