NSC forms three-member committee to probe Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup pull-out

The National Sports Council (NSC) has formed a three-member probe committee to investigate the reasons behind Bangladesh’s absence from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka earlier this year.

According to an NSC document dated May 10, the committee has been asked to prepare a detailed report on the matter and submit its findings to the Ministry of Youth and Sports within the next 15 working days.

The committee will be led by Dr A K M Oli Ullah, additional secretary of the Administration Sub-division at the Ministry of Youth and Sports. Former Bangladesh captain Habibul Bashar Sumon and Supreme Court lawyer and sports organiser Barrister Faisal Dastagir have also been included in the panel.

The investigation committee has been tasked with reviewing all issues related to Bangladesh’s withdrawal from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which was held from February 7 to March 8.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had earlier decided not to send the national team to India for the tournament, citing security concerns and directives from the previous interim government. Bangladesh were later replaced by Scotland in the 20-team event.

State Minister for Youth and Sports Aminul Haque had announced in March that an investigation committee would be formed to determine the circumstances behind Bangladesh’s non-participation in the tournament.

Speaking to reporters at an event at Mirpur Bangla School and College in March, Aminul said the government would look into the matter in detail.

Although players were reportedly interested in taking part in the tournament, the BCB’s decision — influenced by the interim government’s security concerns — sparked controversy within the country’s cricket community.
