Chittagong Port Authority has launched “Port Safety Week-2026” for the first time in its history as part of a major initiative to strengthen safety, security, and emergency preparedness at the country’s premier seaport.
The week-long programme was inaugurated on Sunday morning at the Port Bhaban premises under the theme “Safe Port, Prosperous Nation,” with participation from port officials, employees, and stakeholders.
The event was formally inaugurated by Commodore Ahmed Amin Abdullah, Acting Chairman and Member (Harbour & Marine) of the port authority, who released balloons to mark the beginning of the campaign. Special guest at the ceremony was Md. Shamimuzzaman.
Following the inauguration, a colorful awareness rally moved through several key roads inside Chattogram Port with the participation of port workers and officials.
Speaking at the programme, Commodore Ahmed Amin Abdullah said the initiative aims to ensure uninterrupted economic activities by maintaining safe and efficient port operations. He emphasized that the programme covers the protection of workers, employees, equipment, assets, stakeholders, and overall port infrastructure under a unified safety framework.
Md. Shamimuzzaman said the port authority has strengthened modern surveillance systems, firefighting technologies, and emergency response mechanisms to meet growing global challenges. He added that disaster management plans have also been developed to minimize casualties and property damage during emergencies.
Deputy Director of the Port Security Department Syed Sajjadur Rahman delivered the welcome speech and outlined the week’s activities. He said strict instructions had been issued regarding the mandatory use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) according to job responsibilities.
The programme includes safety briefings, mock drills, and awareness workshops aimed at improving emergency response skills among port personnel. Authorities believe the exercises will help officials and employees respond more effectively during crisis situations.
As part of the initiative, students from port-operated schools, colleges, and madrasas will also receive basic disaster management and first-aid training. The port authority is additionally distributing leaflets containing traffic signs and emergency guidelines to improve safety within the port area.
According to Chittagong Port Authority, ensuring safety at the port is a shared responsibility involving all officials, workers, and port users. Through the coordinated programme, the authority aims to transform Chattogram Port into a safer, more efficient, and internationally standardized seaport.
