Published : Monday, 11 May, 2026 at 7:10 PM  Count : 82

Chattogram District Commissioner Mohammad Jahidul Islam Miah has urged female inmates to reform themselves quickly and return to normal life, keeping their children’s future in mind.

He made the remarks on Monday (May 11) during a visit to the Chattogram Central Jail.

He said, “A father’s or mother’s identity plays the most important role in shaping a child’s bright future.”

During the visit, which was organized with a humanitarian and welfare-oriented approach, the District Commissioner inspected the inmates’ living conditions, healthcare facilities, environment, and rehabilitation activities, and gave necessary instructions to the concerned authorities.

He further said that if any individual is detained due to false cases or legal complications, they will be provided with necessary legal assistance. Addressing the inmates, he added, “You should try to become better people, even by looking at the faces of your children, family, and loved ones.”

Emphasizing health awareness, he said that handwashing habits and access to safe drinking water must be ensured to reduce the risk of waterborne diseases and kidney-related illnesses. According to him, “One of the main causes of kidney disease is contaminated food.”

Earlier, upon his arrival at the prison, the District Commissioner was formally welcomed. A cultural programme featuring children was also arranged. He later visited the cells of female inmates with their children and inquired about their safety, upbringing conditions, and available facilities.

He then inspected the female ward of the prison hospital, reviewing medical services, medicine supply, and overall healthcare quality, and issued necessary instructions.

During the visit, he also observed the inmates’ handicraft activities, including nakshikatha (embroidered quilt) making, as well as various handicrafts made from bamboo and wood. He said such training and production-oriented activities would help inmates become self-reliant and support their reintegration into society.

The District Commissioner also checked the prison kitchen and the quality of food prepared for inmates, instructing authorities to ensure cleanliness and hygiene in food preparation.

Later, he visited male inmate cells and correctional areas, listened to their problems, and assured them of necessary legal support.

Finally, he joined a meeting with prison administration officials. The discussion focused on inmate welfare, ensuring a humane environment, and strengthening rehabilitation activities. The meeting emphasized introducing an online appointment system to make prisoner family visits easier and harassment-free. It also discussed appointing counselors for inmates’ mental health, family issues, and social reintegration.

Additional District Commissioner Syed Mahbubul Haque, Senior Jail Superintendent Md. Iqbal Hossain, along with officials from the district administration and prison authority, were present during the visit.
