Dr. Md. Ziauddin has called for the full implementation of the ongoing Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccination campaign, describing the outbreak of measles as “a disaster-like situation” that must be prevented through coordinated efforts.
He made the remarks while presiding over a divisional coordination meeting on the MR Vaccination Campaign-2026 held at the conference room of the Divisional Commissioner’s Office in Chattogram on Sunday (May 10).
The Divisional Commissioner said that if all children aged between 6 and 59 months are brought under the vaccination programme, the spread of measles can be effectively prevented. He stressed the need to ensure that no child, especially those living in remote and high-risk areas, is left out of the campaign.
Speaking at the meeting, Divisional Director (Health) Dr. Sheikh Fazle Rabbi said a target has been set to vaccinate around 4.296 million children across the Chattogram Division. As of May 9, the vaccination coverage had already reached 98.3 percent.
He said health workers are identifying both registered and unregistered children through door-to-door visits and bringing them to designated centres for free MR vaccination. He also expressed optimism that Chattogram Division would once again secure the top position nationwide in the campaign.
World Health Organization Divisional Coordinator Dr. Emong Pru Chowdhury presented a multimedia overview of the campaign during the meeting. He informed that the MR vaccination drive, which began on April 5, will continue until May 20.
According to him, free MR vaccine doses are being administered daily from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm at 164 permanent centres and 24,640 vaccination centres across the division. To support the campaign, 1,015 mop-up teams and 16 evening teams are also working in the field.
Among others, Additional Divisional Commissioner (General) Md. Motahar Hossain, UNICEF Chief of Field Office Ms. Madhuri Banerjee and Head of the Child Health Department at Chattogram Medical College Hospital Professor Dr. Mohammad Musa Mia also spoke at the meeting, attended by officials from various government and non-government organisations.
