Three suspected cattle thieves were beaten to death by an angry mob in Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur early Sunday.
The incident took place around 4:00am in the Bagchala area under Fulbaria union, according to local residents.
Locals said a group of 10 to 12 suspected cattle lifters arrived in a pickup van and allegedly attempted to steal cattle from the house of one Abu Bakkar Siddique.
Sensing the presence of the intruders, members of the household raised an alarm, prompting local residents to rush to the scene. The villagers chased the group and managed to detain three of the suspects, they added.
The detained men were later severely beaten by the enraged crowd, leaving them critically injured.
The mob also set fire to the pickup van allegedly used by the suspects.
Being informed, police rushed to the spot, rescued the injured and took them to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared them dead.
Officer-in-Charge of Kaliakair Police Station Shahidul Islam said police responded immediately after receiving the information and transported the injured to the hospital.
