Police have detained two women in Jhalakathi over allegations of applying for a Bangladeshi passport using a false identity. One of them is suspected of being a foreign national, while the other allegedly assisted her.
The incident took place at the Jhalakathi Regional Passport Office on Thursday (August 20) afternoon.
The detained women have been identified as Rumi Akhter (21) and Zafrin Akhter Eka (24). Rumi claimed to be a resident of the Chandgaon Notun Bridge area of Chattogram, while Zafrin identified herself as a resident of Batikhana in Barishal.
According to passport office sources, discrepancies were found in Rumi Akhter’s identity and submitted documents while she was applying for a passport. During questioning, doubts arose over her citizenship and identity. Later, Zafrin Akhter Eka, who was allegedly assisting her, was also detained.
Shafiullah, Assistant Director of the Jhalakathi Regional Passport Office, said suspicious information came to light during the verification of Rumi Akhter’s identity and documents. As further doubts arose during questioning, the matter was reported to police. Zafrin Akhter, who was accompanying her, was also detained.
The two women were later handed over to police for further verification of their identities and submitted documents.
Jhalakathi Sadar Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Milan Mallick said police brought the two women to the station after receiving information from the passport office. Initial verification found discrepancies in their identities and documents. The matter is under investigation, and the women are being questioned.
Police said necessary legal action will be taken if the allegations are found to be true after verifying the women’s actual identities and relevant documents.
