A 44-year-old Bangladeshi man was shot dead and another Bangladeshi national was wounded during an argument over an unpaid restaurant bill in Brooklyn, New York, early Sunday, according to police and local community sources.
The deceased was identified as Yusuf Raju, while the injured man was identified as Russell, 39.
The shooting took place in the early hours of Sunday at American Best Wings and Pizza, located at 842 Rockaway Avenue in Brooklyn.
According to restaurant staff and local police, a customer attempted to leave the restaurant without paying his bill. Raju and Russell, who were working at the restaurant, asked him to settle the bill. An argument followed, during which the customer allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired several rounds at the two men before fleeing the scene.
The two victims were rescued and taken to One Brooklyn Health-Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center. The on-duty doctors pronounced Raju dead. He had suffered a gunshot wound to the head.
Russell was shot in the leg and remains under medical care.
A leader of the Noakhali community in Brooklyn confirmed the incident and said representatives of the Noakhali Society had contacted Raju’s family following news of the shooting. The family has requested that his body be repatriated to Bangladesh.
Police said both Raju and Russell were originally from Noakhali, Bangladesh.
Raju reportedly entered the United States illegally through the Mexico border about three years ago and later applied for political asylum. He is survived by his wife, three children, and parents in Bangladesh.
Police are investigating the incident.
