Muhammad Abu Abid, Chief Editor (Planning, Online & Current Affairs) of Mohona Television, has announced his candidacy for the post of General Secretary in the upcoming Combined Journalists Council (SSP) Executive Council Election 2026.
Speaking about the election, he said that ensuring journalists’ unity, rights, and professional security is more important than winning or losing the election.
He further stated that victory and defeat are determined by the will of Allah, but for him, the greatest achievement would be the opportunity to represent nearly 8,000 journalists across the country.
Known for his long-standing activism in defending journalists’ rights, Abu Abid has chosen the slogan:
“Not remedy for journalist oppression, but prevention should be our main goal.”
According to sources, the SSP Election 2026 will be held on Thursday, May 14, at the National Press Club in Dhaka.
Addressing the voters, he said, “I request everyone to participate in the election and cast their votes. Elect the most deserving candidate, but most importantly, take part in the voting process.”
It has been learned that Abu Abid is contesting for the post of General Secretary with voter number 166.
Who is Muhammad Abu Abid?
Muhammad Abu Abid was born in Halishahar, Chattogram, while his ancestral roots are in Dashmina Upazila of Patuakhali district. From an early age, he was actively involved in cultural and organizational activities. He regularly participated in theatre, poetry recitation, and debate competitions, earning recognition and several awards.
During his nearly decade-long journalism career, he has worked with various national and regional media outlets. Currently, he serves as the Chief Editor (Planning, Online & Current Affairs) of Mohona Television. He is also associated with the national daily Alokito Protidin as Managing Editor and Head of Online.
He has also played active roles in journalists’ organizations. He is serving as the Central Joint General Secretary and Spokesperson of the Television Reporters Association of Bangladesh (TRAB), as well as the Central Organizing Secretary and Spokesperson of the Dhaka Metropolitan Crime Reporters Society (DMCRS).
In addition, he previously served as the spokesperson of the Ministry of Public Administration of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.
In 2019, he founded the voluntary organization “Durbar Tarunno Foundation,” which quickly gained nationwide recognition. One of its most discussed initiatives, “Amra Mali” (We Are Gardeners), played an important role in promoting environmental awareness among young people.
The foundation has also carried out various humanitarian and creative programs, including “Free Eid Shopping,” “Rice and Lentils for All,” “Warm Meals in Winter,” the inclusive initiative “Amra Manush” (We Are Human), “Unique Valentine’s Day,” “Pitha Festival,” and “A Different Celebration of Bengali New Year.”
Through these activities, Abu Abid has built a unique movement for social change led by young people. Under his leadership, the foundation has earned several national and international recognitions.
