Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman has said that the government will take necessary steps if any “push-in” incidents occur along the Bangladesh-India border.
Speaking to reporters at the state guest house Padma on Tuesday, the foreign minister said that Dhaka will respond appropriately if such incidents take place, particularly in the context of political changes in India’s West Bengal.
He also said Bangladesh expects progress from India on the implementation of the Teesta water-sharing agreement and will continue discussions with China on its proposed master plan related to the Teesta project as part of broader efforts to address the issue.
Earlier, the foreign minister held a meeting with a visiting US trade delegation in Dhaka. Responding to questions about criticism of the trade agreement with the United States, he said the deal was “very good” and added that critics would better understand its value if they compared it with agreements signed by other countries.
When asked whether the Teesta project would be discussed during his upcoming China visit, Dr. Rahman confirmed that it would be on the agenda. He is scheduled to travel to China on invitation from the Chinese government and will stay in Beijing until May 7.
