Relations with India to remain unchanged regardless of ruling party: Gayeshwar

Relations between Bangladesh and India will remain unchanged irrespective of which party comes to power in India, said Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, a member of the BNP’s National Standing Committee.

He made the remarks on Tuesday after paying tribute at the graves of former president Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia at Zia Udyan in the capital, accompanied by several thousand party leaders and activists.

The programme was organised by leaders and activists from Dhaka district and South Keraniganj to mark the swearing-in of Dhaka District BNP General Secretary Advocate Nipun Roy Chowdhury as a Member of Parliament in a reserved women’s seat. A number of leaders from BNP and its associate bodies at district, upazila and municipal levels were also present.

Responding to questions from journalists, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy said it is not important which party assumes power in India. “We believe in independence and sovereignty; therefore, regardless of who comes to power, relations will remain the same,” he said, congratulating the Indian electorate for choosing their representatives.

He added that Bangladesh does not comment on the internal affairs of other countries and instead prioritises the interests of its own people. Noting that the current government has assumed responsibility amid multiple challenges, he expressed optimism that these would be overcome and stability restored.

The BNP leader said the government must work to fulfil public expectations and place greater emphasis on women’s leadership. “There is no longer a one-party system where anything can be done at will,” he said, adding that the role of the opposition would remain important in governance.

Speaking at the programme, MP Nipun Roy Chowdhury expressed gratitude to party chairman and Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for nominating her to a reserved women’s seat.

She also thanked party leaders, activists and supporters—particularly those from Dhaka district—who stood by her during years of political struggle. “I want to live up to the trust and confidence the Prime Minister has placed in me. My politics in the days ahead will focus on the welfare of the people,” she said.

She added that the country’s foreign policy would be guided by national interests, expressing confidence that the government would not take any decision that goes against the interests of the people.
