US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent T Christensen on Monday met Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at his office in the Secretariat in Dhaka.
During the meeting, they held detailed discussions on bilateral cooperation and development priorities.
Mirza Fakhrul said Dhaka and Washington aim to open a new horizon in development cooperation. Highlighting the importance of international support in Bangladesh’s ongoing development activities, he stressed the need to increase technical assistance, research and investment in sectors such as water supply, agriculture, infrastructure development and rural connectivity.
He described Bangladesh as a promising destination for investment, welcoming interested foreign investors and emphasising greater participation of the private sector in development initiatives.
The minister also noted that the United States has long played a significant role in strengthening the capacity of research institutions in the region and expressed hope that such cooperation would expand further in the future.
Ambassador Christensen, on his part, underscored the importance of coordinated initiatives in sectors of mutual interest. He particularly called for enhanced bilateral cooperation in agriculture, energy support and renewable energy, including solar power.
Both sides expressed optimism that mutual cooperation and partnership would further accelerate the pace of development and progress in Bangladesh and the United States.
Local Government Division Secretary Md Shahidul Hasan and Rural Development and Cooperatives Division Secretary Shaukat Rashid Chowdhury, among other senior officials, were present at the meeting.
