Mild earthquake felt in Dhaka after 5.1 tremor strikes near India–Myanmar border

Published : Tuesday, 21 April, 2026 at 9:42 AM  Count : 9

A mild earthquake was felt in Dhaka this morning.

According to seismic data from EarthquakeTrack, the quake measured 5.1 in magnitude and struck at 6:29 am local time (GMT+6). The epicentre was located near Homalin in Sagaing Region, close to the border with Manipur.

The tremor originated at a depth of approximately 66 kilometres, which likely reduced its intensity at the surface, making it feel relatively mild despite the moderate magnitude. Residents in parts of the capital reported light shaking lasting a few seconds.

Bangladesh, though not located directly on major fault lines, can occasionally feel earthquakes originating in neighbouring regions such as Myanmar and northeastern India due to their active tectonic settings.
