Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is set to hold its next election ahead of the scheduled deadline, with the ad hoc committee aiming to complete preparations by June.
The previous BCB board, led by Aminul Islam Bulbul, was dissolved by the National Sports Council (NSC) on April 7 following allegations of widespread irregularities during last year’s October 6 elections. On the same day, the NSC formed an 11-member ad hoc committee, appointing former national captain Tamim Iqbal as its president.
At the time, the NSC had instructed the committee to organise an election within three months, setting a deadline of July 6. However, the board is now aiming to complete the process well before that date.
“We are preparing to hold the election before the stipulated time. If there are no complications, we would like to arrange it in the first or second week of June,” Tamim told reporters at the press box of the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Monday.
“Before the election can take place, several formalities -- including the formation of an election commission -- will need to be completed,” he added.
Earlier, on the day the ad hoc committee was formed, Tamim had stated that its members would be eligible to contest in the election if they wished, describing the decision as a personal choice.
Since taking charge, the committee has already introduced a number of initiatives. In its second board meeting, it approved salary hikes for both male and female cricketers outside the national setup, while also increasing match fees for the women’s national team.
Meanwhile, the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League (DPL) is expected to resume in early May following the recent players’ transfer window, after overcoming recent disruptions.
The board has also taken steps during the ongoing Bangladesh-New Zealand white-ball series, including setting price caps on stadium food and reintroducing ball boys. However, Tamim mentioned that due to the prevailing heat, ball boys will, for now, only be deployed in the three T20Is, set to begin following the three-match ODI series.
