Ammonia crunch halts production at country’s lone DAP fertiliser plant

Production at the country’s lone state-owned diammonium phosphate (DAP) fertiliser factory in Anwara upazila of Chattogram has been suspended due to the shortage of ammonia, a key raw material.

Officials said the generation was halted around 8:00pm on Saturday.

Confirming the matter, Alamgir Jalil, manager and head of administration at DAP Fertilizer Company Limited (DAPFCL), said the shortage of ammonia has made it impossible to continue operations.

“We depend on ammonia supply from Chittagong Urea Fertilizer Limited (CUFL) and Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company Limited (KAFCO). Both factories are currently closed. Until they resume production and supply ammonia, we have no option but to keep DAPFCL closed,” he said.

The two major fertiliser plants – CUFL and KAFCO – located in Anwara remained closed since March 4 due to the gas shortage.

Sources said DAPFCL was established under the Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) to ensure balanced fertiliser use in the agricultural sector and meet the growing demand for compound fertilisers containing nitrogen and phosphorus.

Located in Rangadia of Anwara upazila, the factory has two units (DAP-1 and DAP-2) with a combined production capacity of 800 tonnes of DAP fertiliser per day. Since starting commercial operations in 2006, the plant has been playing a key role in supplying fertiliser to the country’s agriculture sector.

Currently, the factory produces around 600-700 tonnes of fertiliser daily when operational, officials added.
