Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Hafiz Uddin Ahmed left Dhaka for Tehran on Thursday morning to attend the funeral of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The Speaker departed from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 7:30am on a flight bound for the Iranian capital.

Ayatollah Khamenei, who was born on 19 April 1939 in Mashhad, north-eastern Iran, passed away on 28 February 2026 at the age of 86.

He played a pivotal role in Iran's political leadership following the 1979 Islamic Revolution. In 1980, he briefly served as Iran's Minister of Defence before assuming greater responsibilities during the Iran-Iraq War, including overseeing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. He was later elected President of Iran.

Following the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989, Iran's Assembly of Experts selected Khamenei as the country's Supreme Leader, a position he held for more than three decades.

The Speaker is scheduled to return home on 4 July after attending the funeral proceedings in Tehran.
