Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has announced that a special Indemnity Ordinance would be introduced to ensure full legal protection for participants in the July movement.
He said the government is firmly committed to taking all necessary steps in line with public expectations and the core aspirations of the July uprising.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists on Tuesday morning before attending the first meeting of a special parliamentary committee at the Cabinet Room of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
The committee, considered highly significant in the current context, began its activities with Speaker (Retd) Major Hafiz Uddin Ahmed in the chair.
The committee has been entrusted with reviewing a total of 133 ordinances issued during the interim government period. Each ordinance will be examined thoroughly to determine whether it should be retained or repealed in light of the present situation.
The Home Minister said the primary objective of the review is to ensure a strong legal framework consistent with the country’s current political and social realities. The future of various legal decisions taken during the interim period will largely depend on the committee’s activities.
Notably, Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman placed the 133 ordinances in Parliament on 12 March, the first day of its maiden sitting. Under parliamentary rules, only 30 working days remain to reach final decisions on these ordinances.
The Home Minister expressed hope that the government would complete the process swiftly upholding the spirit of the July mass uprising.
