Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations across Bangladesh may face disruption as meteorologists issue warnings of severe nor’wester (Kalbaishakhi) storms throughout the country.
The Bangladesh Weather Observation Team (BWOT) has forecast widespread storms and rainfall before, during, and after Eid, with the harshest conditions expected on the day of Eid prayers.
According to the agency, a strong nor’wester is likely to enter the country through the northwestern region on the night before Eid.
Several divisions, including Mymensingh, Sylhet, Dhaka, Khulna, and Barishal, could see thunderstorms and rain during Eid congregations, potentially affecting prayers held in open spaces.
The storm is expected to spread from Rangpur and Rajshahi to Khulna, Barishal, Dhaka, Mymensingh, and Sylhet by morning, reaching Chattogram division by noon.
Meteorologists also predict a second round of storms in the afternoon, raising concerns that adverse weather may continue for much of the day. Warnings extend to the days surrounding Eid, with BWOT noting that Friday afternoon may see worsening conditions, particularly in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, and Sylhet, as well as parts of other regions.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve the day after Eid, although coastal areas may still experience light rain early in the morning.
Authorities have urged citizens to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and take necessary safety measures to cope with the potential severe weather during the festive period.
