A former Krishak Dal leader succumbed to injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital this morning, around 14 hours after an attack on him in Gazipur’s Kapasia upazila.
Helal Uddin, 55, the former organising secretary of Kapasia upazila unit of Krishak Dal, declared dead at the DMCH around 10:00am.
Kapasia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahinur Alam told that, "Helal Uddin was on his way home around 8:30am yesterdaywhen 4-5 unidentified miscreants with sovel in Kotbajalia area and fled the scene."
Later, locals rescued and took him to Kapasia Upazila Health Complex in a critical condition, the OC said.
After providing primary treatment, the on-duty doctor referred him to DMCH where he was declared dead around 10:00am today, the OC added.
OC Shahinur Alam said that it is initially believed that the murder could have been committed due to a family dispute.
"Helal Uddin had an argument with his nephew yesterday regarding the theft of a mobile phone. The murder may have been committed based on this incident."
Legal action is in process over the incident, the OC said.
Police said preparations are underway to send the body to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital in Gazipur for autopsy.
Fakir Iskander Alam Janu, member secretary of the Gazipur district unit of Krishak Dal, termed the murder as "brutal".
The victim's wife Rofiza Khatun told reporters that she will filed a murder case.
