The seventh edition of the Nepal Cultural International Film Festival (NCIFF), organised by the Nepal Culture and Film Centre, began on January 30 in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, and will continue until February 1.
Among 85 semifinalist films from 39 countries, one of the most talked-about entries this year is the Bangladeshi documentary I’m Telling You, directed by filmmaker Shahadat Russell.
The documentary stands out for its raw portrayal of Russell’s personal struggle as a human rights filmmaker in Bangladesh. I’m Telling You delves into the dark realities faced by artists and writers who challenge extremism and injustice, highlighting Russell’s own life-threatening encounters with Islamic terrorist groups. The film is not only a testimony to his resilience but also a powerful reflection on the risks endured by those who use cinema as a tool for truth and resistance.
Festival Co-Director Srishti Neupane noted that this year’s festival received over 700 submissions from more than 75 countries, with 138 films officially selected. Out of these, 85 films—including I’m Telling You—were shortlisted for the award competition.
Festival Director Santosh Subedi emphasized that the festival celebrates diverse voices and themes, ranging from women and children’s issues to human rights and cultural identity. In this context, Russell’s documentary resonates deeply, offering a stark reminder of the dangers faced by filmmakers who confront oppressive forces.
During the Closing Ceremony, awards will be presented to 30 films (15 national and 15 international) across categories such as Best Film, Best Director, Best Documentary, and Best Human Rights Film. I’m Telling You is expected to draw attention in the human rights category, as it embodies the courage and creative defiance of a filmmaker who continues to tell his story despite threats to his life.
The Nepal Cultural International Film Festival, now in its seventh year, has become a platform for cultural, social, and creative cinema from around the world. This year, Sahadat Russell’s I’m Telling You ensures that the struggles of Bangladeshi artists against extremism are not only heard but remembered.
