File PhotoActor Riaz has been denied anticipatory bail in two murder cases filed over incidents during the July uprising.
Riaz appeared in person before the High Court on Thursday and sought anticipatory bail in the two cases.
A bench of Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher, after hearing the petitions, disposed of the petitions.
One of the cases was filed over an alleged attempt to kill Saifuddin Mohammad Emdad, a student of Government Alia Madrassah in Dhaka, during the anti-discrimination student-people’s movement.
The case was filed on May 2, 2025, against 201 people, including deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina. The accused include artists, journalists, teachers and political figures.
Earlier, on April 30, 2025, Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Mohammad Monirul Islam directed Shahbagh police to treat a complaint as a first information report.
Fourteen actors and actresses were named as accused in the case. They include Riaz, Ferdous Ahmed, Chanchal Chowdhury, Mamunur Rashid, Meher Afroz Shaon, Aruna Biswas, Jyotika Jyoti, Shamima Tusty, Shomi Kaiser, Saju Khadem, Ashna Habib Bhabna, Sohona Saba, Rokeya Prachi and Zayed Khan.
