Law Adviser Asif Nazrul has termed the verdict against deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal a "historic moment for Bangladesh".
Speaking after the court handed down death sentences in the crimes against humanity case linked to last year's July uprising, Nazrul said the judgement marks a significant step toward justice for those killed, injured, or disabled during the movement.
He cited several victims by name and said he believes their families might find "some comfort" after the verdict.
Nazrul said he is "satisfied but not surprised" by the verdict, noting that the evidence against Hasina and her associates was "strong and wide ranging".
Any court in the world would have delivered the highest punishment based on such evidence, he added.
Nazrul said the government will again request India to extradite Hasina.
"If India continues to shelter her, it would be seen as an act of hostility toward Bangladesh," Nazrul said.
The adviser thanked the chief prosecutor, the prosecution team and all the witnesses involved in the case.
He added that the current government will move forward with all ongoing trials and expressed hope that any future elected government would remain committed to completing the judicial process.
Nazrul declined to comment on other pending cases.
