A significant number of popular websites across the globe suddenly went offline, with similar disruptions affecting various domestic sites.
The cause of the widespread issue has been identified as a major outage within the Cloudflare network.
Users attempting to access numerous websites, including social media platform X and film review site Letterboxd, were met with an error message stating that the page could not be loaded "due to a Cloudflare problem."
Cloudflare, which functions as a critical internet infrastructure provider, issued a statement acknowledging the issue and confirming that they were working on a resolution.
Their official statement noted: "We are aware of an issue that may be impacting service for multiple customers. Investigation is underway and updates will be provided as soon as more information becomes available."
As an internet infrastructure company, Cloudflare provides crucial services such as protection against cyberattacks and managing high levels of web traffic.
A minor error in their system can therefore have a significant ripple effect across numerous websites globally.
Interestingly, Down Detector, a platform that monitors website outages, was also temporarily affected by the same problem. Once the site was accessible again, it showed a dramatic surge in reports regarding global website disruptions.
Impacted users often saw a specific message indicating an internal server error within Cloudflare's network, with the prompt: "Please try again in a few minutes."
The exact number of websites worldwide that were affected by this widespread outage is yet to be determined.
