A class 8 student was detained in Cumilla's Nangolkot upazila and later sent to jail through a court on accusations of being involved with Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and participating in a rally.

The detainee's father said his 15-year-old son is a student of class eight. Police picked him up from their home around 3:00am on November 18 and later produced him before a court, which ordered to sent him to jail.

Contacted, Senior Jail Superintendent of Cumilla Central Jail Halima Khatun said the court has sent the boy to the jail. After completing formalities, he will be sent to the Juvenile Development Centre in Gazipur.

Identifying himself as a small businessman, the father said that despite trying for the last two days, he could neither secure bail for his son nor obtain permission for him to sit for the annual exam from jail. The examination began today.

Local residents and Awami League supporters alleged that after the verdict against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina case on November 17, party supporters from various areas gathered in Nangalkot, held a rally, and were dispersed. Later, police detained several individuals abelling them as Chhatra League activists or supporters.

The detainee's father alleged that his son's academic year is now at risk due to the actions of Nangalkot police.

In response, Fazlul Haque, officer-in-charge of Nangalkot Police Station, said they detained six individuals based on specific allegations of participating in the rally and sent them to court.

Speaking on the matter, the head teacher of the high school, said, "Our annual exams begin today. The student's father has collected a certification letter from the school to present before the court," he added.

Court Inspector Mohammad Mamunur Rashid said that if the accused is an underage student, the magistrate will consider the matter if it is under trial, or the investigating officer will consider it if the case is under investigation.

Advocate Abdullah Al Noman of Cumilla Judge Court said that since the student is underage, the court may give the matter due consideration.
