Jamaat to announce final list of election candidates ‘in due time’: Shafiqur

Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has said his party's final list of candidates for the upcoming 13th parliamentary election will be announced "in due time."

"BNP hasn't published its final list yet. I've seen that they released names for 237 constituencies but said it's not final and that changes may still come," he told reporters at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport early today after returning from a 15-day foreign trip to the United States, the United Kingdom and Turkey.

"We, on the other hand, announced our list almost a year ago in various forms, regionally. The final list will be declared by the central committee at the appropriate time, In Sha Allah," he added.

"Since we won't contest the election alone and will accommodate others in the interest of the nation, we'll make the announcement considering all aspects," he further said.

The Jamaat chief also urged political parties to ensure that differences of opinion do not turn into conflicts amid the current political situation.

"There will be differences among us, but please pray that those differences don't lead to discord," he said, adding that "differences in views will remain—that's the beauty of democracy. All parties are not the same; they have diverse perspectives. We respect everyone's opinion."

His remarks came as the interim government's advisory council expressed concern over disagreements among political parties regarding the implementation of the July National Charter, a reform proposal introduced earlier this year. The council has urged all parties to engage in dialogue and present a unified guideline to the interim administration.

He also urged the authorities to extend the deadline for expatriates to register as voters by another 15 days.

Shafiqur was received at the airport by senior Jamaat leaders and party supporters.
