Mahfuz Alam, adviser to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, has said that the long-anticipated trial of Sheikh Hasina has commenced and a verdict is expected to be delivered next week.
Speaking at a meeting with families of the July martyrs at the Ramganj Upazila Parishad auditorium in Lakshmipur on Tuesday, Mahfuz Alam said the government had fulfilled its pledge to begin the process of justice.
“We came with a commitment to begin the process of justice — and we have succeeded in starting it. Next week, the trial of Sheikh Hasina will conclude with a verdict. This will, to some extent, ease the pain of the families of the July martyrs,” he said.
The adviser noted that proceedings in other related cases were also underway.
“The tribunal is active, and everyone involved in the killings and enforced disappearances of students and civilians will face justice. The next government will continue these trials,” he added.
Mahfuz Alam also spoke about the progress of national reform efforts, highlighting the signing of the July Charter by major political parties as a landmark step toward consensus-based governance.
“Through this agreement, Bangladesh has embarked on a new chapter,” he said.
He expressed hope that the next elected government would carry forward the reform and justice agenda outlined in the July Charter to build a “new Bangladesh” rooted in rule of law, accountability, and balance of power, free from enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings.
