The National Citizen Party has decided to accept "Shapla Koli" (water lily bud) as its official electoral symbol.
NCP Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary shared this information while talking to the media after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin at Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka on Sunday.
With the new decision, the party backtracked from its earlier stance, in which the party had been rigidly demanding "Shapla" (water lily) as its electoral symbol.
On 30 October, the Election Commission issued a gazette notification, which includes a list of 119 electoral symbols, including "Shapla Koli". The NCP then said that if they were allotted the "Shapla Koli" symbol, they would not accept it.
However, while speaking to the journalists on Sunday, Nasiruddin said, “We have decided to accept ‘Shapla Koli’ as the electoral symbol. But, there is one issue here – we have yet to receive any clarification regarding the ‘Shapla’ symbol.”
He said, “Considering the Election Commission’s arbitrary conduct, should we keep getting stuck over the symbol? Should we not enter the election phase? That is why we are making this decision, thinking of the greater interest.”
The NCP chief coordinator said they have also received a positive response from the people across the country regarding the "Shapla Koli" symbol.
Nasiruddin said the NCP will field candidates in all 300 constituencies in the upcoming 13th parliamentary election. “If anyone from any part of the country comes to their office expressing interest in contesting the election on behalf of the NCP, the party will consider it.”
He also urged the Election Commission to complete the process of the NCP’s registration without delay.
