Six people were killed in a head-on collision between a truck and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Noakhali's Kabirhat this afternoon.
Three of the victims were identified as Md Suman, 30, of Companiganj upazila; auto-rickshaw driver Md Shah Alam, 47, of Basurhat municipality in Companiganj; and Tanim Hasan, 22, a student of Noakhali Government College from Senbug upazila.
Police and Fire Service officials said they could not immediately confirm the identities of the three other female victims.
All six victims were in the auto-rickshaw, said Md Shahin Mia, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kabirhat Police Station.
The accident occurred around 2:30pm in front of Kabirhat Islamia Alim Madrasa on the Kabirhat-Basurhat road, he said.
Md Rubel Mia, a local resident who witnessed the crash, said the CNG-run auto-rickshaw carrying five passengers was heading toward Basurhat in Companiganj from Noakhali town.
When the three-wheeler reached Islamia Alim Madrasa, it reportedly veered onto the opposite lane as the driver lost control. At that time, a truck coming from the opposite direction hit the auto-rickshaw head-on and dragged it for a distance.
OC Shahin said the accident left three dead on the spot and three others injured.
The three survivors were taken to Kabirhat Upazila Health Complex where the doctor declared a woman dead. Two others were shifted to the 250 Bed General Hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival, said OC.
The truck driver fled the scene immediately after the accident, added the policeman.
