Three new political parties are set to receive registration from the Election Commission (EC). After the publication of a public notice, the parties will be granted final registration if no objections are raised.
Speaking to reporters at his office in Agargaon’s Election Bhaban on Tuesday (November 4), EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed confirmed the development.
According to him, following preliminary scrutiny of 143 applications, three political parties met the required conditions during field-level verification. These are— Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist), Bangladesh Aam Janagan Party, and National Citizen Party (NCP). The commission has found these three eligible for registration.
A public notice seeking opinions or objections regarding these parties will be published in newspapers on Wednesday. The deadline for submitting feedback or objections has been set for November 12, after which the EC will make its final decision upon reviewing all responses.
The secretary further said that although initially considered, the registration processes of Jatiya Janata Party, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (Shahjahan Siraj), and Jatiya League have been canceled due to a lack of continuous political activity.
Additionally, eight other parties— Aam Janatar Dal, Bangladesh Justice and Development Party, Bhashani Jonoshokti Party, Bangladesh Bekar Mukti Parishad, Jonotar Dal, Moulik Bangla, Jonotar Party, and Bangladesh Ganatantrik Party— have been rejected for failing to meet verification standards.
Eligibility Criteria and Relaxations
In response to a question, the EC secretary explained that political parties must fulfill at least one of two key conditions to qualify for registration:
either have functional offices and members in 100 upazilas/metropolitan areas, or maintain active offices and members in 22 districts.
He added that following a court directive, the EC has applied a slightly lenient approach, considering some parties despite minor shortfalls in meeting the criteria.
Final Decision Timeline and Election Symbols
The deadline for receiving public opinions or objections is November 12. If no major complications arise, the commission expects to issue the final decision or gazette notification by November 14 or 15.
Regarding election symbols, the EC secretary said that the NCP and two other parties have applied for specific symbols, with one seeking a change to its proposed symbol. The commission is currently reviewing these requests, and availability will be confirmed in the upcoming notice.
