Illegal cigarettes worth Tk 5 crore seized at Mongla Port: Action taken against Munni Enterprise

Illegal cigarettes worth Tk 5 crore have been seized at Mongla Port due to the smart action of the Customs House. This huge quantity of cigarettes was recovered from a 20-foot long container of PIL Bangladesh Limited at the Mongla Port Jetty on Tuesday (13 May 2025) afternoon.

According to customs sources, although the container was declared to import ribbons, the container was examined when suspicion arose during the discharge process. After the examination, it was found that it contained 7.8 million cigarettes of the Oris Silver brand, which were organized in 390 packages. The market value of the seized cigarettes is estimated at Tk 5 crore 4 lakh 56 thousand 406.

An importing company named 'Munni Enterprise' is behind this smuggling attempt.  The customs authorities have confirmed that the company tried to bring in these illegal cigarettes by forging import declarations.

Commissioner of Mongla Custom House Muhammad Shafiuzzaman told the Daily Financial Post, "Necessary legal action is being taken under the customs law as the declared goods do not match the imported goods. We have always been strict in preventing smuggling."

A case is being prepared against the company concerned in this incident soon, a Customs House source said.

Such operations are not only a clear proof of the Customs House's dedication and professionalism in preventing illegal trade, but also in protecting the country's revenue.
