An Awami League leader was reportedly assaulted by four fellow inmates inside the lockup of the Bogura Chief Judicial Magistrate Court.
Abu Sufian Shafiq, former chairman of Bogura Sadar Upazila Parishad and president of the Bogura Sadar upazila unit of Awami League, was assaulted in court this afternoon, Bogura Court Inspector Mosaddek Hossain confirmed.
The incident took place around 1:30pm when Shafiq was brought to the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court lockup for a hearing. Following the hearing, he was placed in the lockup, where four other accused were present.
They are Sagar, Jalil, Sabbir, and Kalam. Among them, Sagar, Jalil, and Sabbir are accused in a murder case while Kalam is an accused in a drugs case, said the court inspector.
"Inmate Kalam and Shafiq went to use the court's toilet together where an argument broke out over a trivial matter which escalated into a physical assault," he said.
When Shafiq washed his hands and was shaking the water off his hands, some drops fell on Kalam which led to a verbal exchange, he added.
"Later, Sagar, along with Jalil, Kalam, and Sabbir, allegedly attacked Shafiq in the lockup."
"Police intervened immediately to control the situation and moved Shafiq to a different location," added the court inspector.
As the judicial magistrate was informed about the incident, he sent them to jail again, said the policeman.
However, talking to local journalists at the court premises, Shafiq alleged, "The attack on me was carried out on the instructions of Police Inspector Mosaddek Hossain. Even when I took shelter in the bathroom, they continued to beat me. I did not receive any security even in police custody. After the assault, instead of providing medical treatment, they hurriedly sent me back to jail."
Asked about the allegation, Mosaddek said, "I was not present there. Why should I go to the toilet to give instructions?"
