Embezzlement of millions through fake bills

Allegations have surfaced regarding the embezzlement of approximately 1.05 million BDT in the Eastern Region of Bangladesh Railway by submitting fake travel bills in the names of government officials. Based on preliminary investigations, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) conducted a raid at three railway offices in Pahartali, Chattogram.

Initial investigations revealed that railway officials withdrew money by submitting fake travel vouchers without actually making any trips. Fraudulent travel documents were created in the names of various employees and officials, although no real travel took place.

Following these allegations, a team led by Syed Alam, Assistant Director of the ACC’s Integrated Chattogram District Office-1, carried out the operation. As part of the raid, important documents were seized from the offices of the Divisional Commercial Officer, Chief Accounts Officer, and Divisional Establishment Officer.

Assistant Director Syed Alam stated, "Our preliminary investigation has identified irregularities in the misuse of government funds. We have reviewed several documents and found discrepancies. The seized papers will be examined further, and appropriate actions will be taken accordingly."

Earlier, another case of embezzlement of nearly 9.7 million BDT through fake bills and vouchers in the Eastern Railway Region came to light, which is still under investigation. These incidents highlight significant weaknesses in the railway’s financial management.

The ACC is currently reviewing the seized documents and plans to take action against those involved. Investigations are ongoing to identify the corrupt individuals and bring them under legal proceedings. Experts emphasize that greater transparency is essential to prevent such incidents from recurring.
